Arriving in Austria
When you arrive in Austria, there are a few important steps to take:
Registration: Within three days of arrival, all residents must register at the local registration office (Meldeamt). You will need your passport, rental agreement, and the completed registration form (Meldezettel). For students staying on campus, the ITM administration will assist you.
Opening a Bank Account: A local bank account is recommended for daily expenses, tuition payments, and visa requirements. To open an account, bring your passport, proof of residence, and study confirmation.
Mobile Phone & Internet: Austrian mobile providers offer prepaid and contract options. SIM cards are available in supermarkets, electronics stores, or directly from mobile providers.
Public Transport: Austria has an excellent public transport network, including trains, buses, and trams. Students can benefit from discounted travel passes such as the Top Jugend Ticket (€86 per year), valid for Vienna and surrounding regions.
Climate & What to Pack
Austria has four distinct seasons, so it is important to be prepared for different weather conditions:
Spring (March–May): Mild but sometimes rainy. Pack light jackets, sweaters, and an umbrella.
Summer (June–August): Warm, with temperatures reaching 35°C. Bring light clothing, swimwear, and sandals.
Autumn (September–November): Cool mornings and evenings. Pack warm sweaters, cardigans, and jackets.
Winter (December–February): Cold, often below 0°C, with snow. Essential items include a warm coat, gloves, scarves, and winter boots.
For academic and formal occasions, students should also bring business casual attire and an ITM uniform for official events, practical training, and guest lectures.
Austrian Culture & Daily Life
Austria is known for its rich history, hospitality, and traditions. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
Language: German is the official language. While many people speak English, learning basic German phrases will enhance your experience.
Punctuality: Austrians value being on time for appointments, classes, and social events.
Shops & Services: Most shops are closed on Sundays, except at major train stations and airports. Supermarkets and pharmacies close early on Saturdays.
